This article was first published here on REDigitalUnicorn. I grew my Instagram from 500 to 4,200 followers in 60 days, and I can show you how to do it too! There is still a window of opportunity on Instagram for fast organic growth because it’s still an underrated social network. Reported by CNBC in September of 2017, Instagram is one of fastest growing social media platforms with 800 million+ users, up 100 million since April. Having said that with 500 million+ daily users, achieving brand visibility, blog traffic, and sales inquiries is no easy feat. My top five tips for Instagram business success:Stay On Brand80% of the feeds on Instagram that I see are not marketable for business. Because of the way Instagram curates your feed, it looks terrible to post random photos from your day in the same manner in which you may post to Facebook. Staying on brand for business is as simple as staying professional both with your photography choices and your storytelling. One way that I’ve found to bridge the gap with content is to use quotes with an app like Typorama or Wordswag. This also breaks your photos up if your filter isn’t 100% consistent. ConsistencyThe Instagram algorithm rewards users for consistency and for accounts with high engagement. Tying into the above tip to stay on brand, this will ensure consistent likes and comments. Post consistently with once a day being the most favorable way to grow your account. Some brands post up to three times a day, however that would be very difficult for a small business to keep up with terrific content at that pace. You also want to be consistent with likes and comments to those that like/comment on your posts. My followers that like my photos know that it will be reciprocated because we’ve been interacting for some time now. Poor Use of HashtagsOne of the biggest mistakes I see on Instagram is using just plain stupid hashtags from a marketing standpoint. For example #sun has 178,833,823 posts. How can you possibly think your post will show in the hashtag deck with that many posts? You will be lost in less than one second. Research hashtags to come up with 3-4 sets of on brand hashtags with various post counts. Smaller post counts can help your post stay alive for up to a week+ and give you the possibility of ranking in the top 9 for the hashtag which is algorithmically based placement. Instagram allows you to use 30 hashtags, so use all 30! This is how non followers will find you and your content. There are tricks around 30 to use up to 60 but don't do it! This will result in a Shadowban. ShadowbanningThe Instagram shadowban (also called Stealth banning, ghost banning or comment ghosting) is Instagram’s way to prevent users from posting against their terms of service and to eliminate hashtag spam. An post that has been shadowbanned wouldn't show organically in the explore page or the hashtag deck. If you are logged in you will see your post on the hashtag deck so this can be deceiving. DO NOT BUY FOLLOWERS as your account will not be rewarded by Instagram suggesting your account as a "suggested user to follow, ” and your posts to a new audience. It's very obvious to all Instagrammers based on your engagement ratio to follower count if you've bought likes. Text EditorA free text editor like Evernote helps you create a clean bio layout and line breaks on your posts. Evernote has both a desktop and mobile app that automatically syncs. It’s sometimes easier to do hashtag research on a desktop, copy paste into Evernote, and then use the mobile version to copy and paste the actual post into Instagram. You can also save templates with hashtags for future use. Don’t be afraid to sprinkle in emojis. It helps break up text into more readable bites.
